Mumblings & Musings December 2010

Welcome to my newsletter, Mumblings and Musings, in which I share a bit about my life... my musings.  I'm delighted you are here!

Paying it Forward

When a doctor tells you that you need immediate surgery—or you'll die—it gets your attention.

I was 20 years old and preparing to enter the University of Hawaii liberal arts program as a transfer student. I'd gone through some rough patches in my young life, but it looked like things were starting to look up and I was really excited for a new start. The university required each student to have a physical exam before entering. I thought that it would be routine, but after some tests, the doctor came into the exam room with a worried look on his face.

Evidently, there was a large hole between my aorta and my vena cava, and blood was leaving the heart only to return immediately back into the heart. As a result, my heart had enlarged because it was trying to keep the blood circulating. He said that it was like having a time bomb in my chest that could explode at any moment, and that I needed surgery immediately.

When I explained that I didn't have insurance or any money, he told me to contact Social Services to see if they could help. The next day I went to their offices to apply for aid. I stood in a very long line for a number of hours; it was also the line for anyone applying for welfare.

When I finally got to the head of the line, the Social Services agent coldly peered at me over the rim of her glasses and let out a loud sigh. It was evident in the condescending look in her eye that she thought that I was one more "loafer" trying to get a free handout from the government. It was hard enough for me to ask for help, but then to be treated like I was trying to get away with something made me feel demeaned and humiliated. With distain, this Social Services bureaucrat told me that they couldn't pay for surgery and referred me to another government agency that, in turn, referred me to another agency. No one could help, and I didn't know where to turn. I was desperate, so I called my father to ask for help. He hadn't been a very good father, by any stretch of the word, but I hoped that he would help me anyway. However, all he said was, "Good luck, I hope that you can find someone to help you."

Finally, I was referred to the government agency that was in charge of vocational rehabilitation. I was ready to be disappointed, once again. But when I entered the office of the vocational rehabilitation councilor, the room seemed to glow with warmth. The counselor's name was "Joy" and she was a reflection of her name, as she welcomed me with grace and kindness. She told me that authorizing that kind of surgery was beyond their capacity, because it was such an expensive procedure, but she was going to do whatever she could to help me anyway. She then tried every avenue she could think of to raise the funds for the surgery. She wouldn't give up.

It was no small effort on her part and there were times when she put her job in jeopardy. But not only did she get the state government to pay for the surgery—which saved my life—but when I was recovering from the surgery, she also got the government to pick up my tuition and supplies at the University of Hawaii, as well as my rent and food, until I could get back on my feet. She was my angel.

I was so profoundly grateful that one day I asked her what I could do to begin to pay her back. I'll never forget her words.

She said, "You'll never be able to pay me back . . . now. But in the future, it's inevitable that you may meet people in need. The best way you can pay me back is to help those people . . . pay it forward." I have never forgotten her words. And now when someone says, "Denise, how can I ever pay you back for what you've done for me?" I say, "Pay it forward. Help others, even if there is no way that they can ever pay you back."

Here's to "Paying it Forward" as we embark on a new year! Happy Holidays!!
